This paper is dedicated to the numerical simulation of nuclear components (cores and steam generators) by fictitious domain methods. The fictitious domain approach consists in immersing the physical domain under study in a Cartesian domain, called the fictitious domain, and in performing the numerical resolution on this fictitious domain. The calculation times are then efficiently reduced by the use of fast solvers. In counterpart, one has to handle with an immersed boundary, generally non‐aligned with the Cartesian mesh, which can be non‐trivial. The two fictitious domain methods compared here on industrial simulations and developed by Ramière et al. deal with an approximate immersed interface directly derived from the uniform Cartesian mesh. All the usual immersed boundary conditions (Dirichlet, Robin, Neumann), possibly mixed, are handled through a unique formulation of the fictitious problem. This kind of approximation leads to first‐order methods in space that exhibit a good ratio of the precision of the approximate solution over the CPU time, which is very important for industrial simulations. After a brief recall of the fictitious domain method with spread interface (Ramière et al., CMAME 2007) and the fictitious domain method with immersed jumps (Ramière et al., JCP 2008), we will focus on the numerical results provided by these methods applied to the energy balance equation in a steam generator. The advantages and drawbacks of each method will be pointed out. We prove in this paper an existence result for frequency modes coupling seismic waves and vibrating tall buildings. The derivation from physical principles of a set of equations modeling this phenomenon was done in previous studies. In this model all vibrations are assumed to be anti-plane and time harmonic so the two dimensional Helmholtz equation can be used. A coupling frequency mode is obtained once we can determine a wavenumber such that the solution of the corresponding Helmholtz equation in the lower half plane with relevant Neumann and Dirichlet conditions at the interface satisfies a specific integral equation at the base of an idealized tall building. Although numerical simulations suggest that such wavenumbers should exist, as far as we know, to date, there is no theoretical proof of their existence. In this paper, we study the weighted Korn inequality on some irregular domains, e.g., s-John domains and domains satisfying quasihyperbolic boundary conditions. In this note, we study a semilinear system involving the operator curl in an exterior domain in R3, which is the limiting form of the Ginzburg–Landau model for superconductors in three dimensions for a large value of the Ginzburg–Landau parameter. Many problems of mechanics and physics are posed in unbounded (or infinite) domains. For solving these problems one typically limits them to bounded domains and finds ways to set appropriate conditions on artificial boundaries or use quasi-uniform grid that maps unbounded domains to bounded ones. Differently from the above methods we approach to problems in unbounded domains by infinite systems of equations. In this paper we develop this approach for an elliptic problem in an infinite semistrip. Using the idea of Polozhii in the method of summary representations we transform the infinite system of three-point vector equations to infinite systems of three-point scalar equations and obtain the approximate solution with a given accuracy.
